Predators and exploiters flock to places where they can make connections; that includes the digital environment. Creating and sharing child sexual abuse material, grooming and gaining trust, posting ads for jobs that seem like a dream come true, yet are anything but … there are a lot of ways in which the digital space is misused. Here are some ways LifeWay takes action!
Computer Literacy:
Many residents did not have access to technology before coming to LifeWay Network and need one-on-one assistance in this area. We have been providing residents with help accessing their online English classes, emails, and Telehealth medical appointments both on the house laptops and on their personal phones. We walk them through what they need until they feel confident to do it on their own (i.e., checking their email for a Zoom link, understanding how to access and submit their online homework, writing a message to a potential employer, etc).
Virtual Education:
The pandemic inspired LifeWay’s education program to continue to inform — virtually. To stop spreading the word about the harms of human trafficking felt unfathomable, and we have since adjusted: offering virtual Lunch & Learns and trainings, and utilizing social media to continue to engage communities to understand human trafficking. We even offer an Internet Safety & Human Trafficking Simulation!
EARN IT Act:
The circulation of Child Sexual Abuse Materials (CSAM) (sometimes referred to as “child pornography”) online has exploded over the last two decades. Examples include live streaming sexual abuse, online grooming and child sexual abuse/exploitation materials. The Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies Act of 2020 is designed to increase Big Tech accountability on 1) CSAM and 2) enticement, grooming, sex trafficking and sexual abuse. LifeWay joins survivor leaders and important organizations such as NCOSE to advocate for the EARN IT Act!
