A few weeks ago, our Director of Development, Sr. Melissa Camardo, gave a moving speech at a United Nations event titled, “Police and Religious Leaders Partnering to Eradicate Modern Slavery By Building Trust in Leadership, Action and Accountability.” Through anecdotes about her favorite place in the safe house, the dining room table, she vividly describes the range of life she witnesses among the survivors who live among our host communities. Birthdays are celebrated for the first time, food from all around the world is shared, personal histories are recounted. Both the past and the future are terrifying for these women and they bring all their fears and dreams to the table.
